What Is an Area Code Overlay? Why Your City Has More Than One Area Code

If you have ever wondered why your neighbor's number starts with a different area code than yours even though you live on the same street, the answer is almost always an overlay.

What an overlay is

An area code can only hold a limited number of phone numbers. When a region starts to run out, regulators add a new area code. There are two ways to do it:

  • A split divides the region in two. One half keeps the old code and the other half gets the new one, which forces many people to change their number. Splits were common in the 1990s.
  • An overlay adds the new code on top of the same territory. Everyone keeps their existing number, and new numbers are issued from either code. Today, overlays are the usual approach.

The result is that one city can have two, three or even four area codes that are all equally local.

What it means for dialing

Because two different numbers in the same neighborhood can have different area codes, overlay areas use ten-digit dialing for local calls — you dial the area code even when calling next door. Saving numbers in your phone with the full ten digits avoids any confusion.

Is the original area code better?

Functionally, no. A number in an overlay code rings the same way, costs the same to call and is just as local. The difference is perception: long-time residents often recognize the original code — 212, 310, 305 — as the classic one for the city. Because those codes have been in use the longest, clean or memorable numbers in them are harder to find and can cost more.

Overlay codes are a smart way to get a more memorable number in the same area. You are more likely to find repeating or sequential digits in a newer code like 857, 332 or 628 than in the original.

  1. Find your city in the Area Code Guide and note every code that covers it.
  2. Search each code on Browse Numbers.
  3. If the original code has nothing you love, check the overlay codes for a cleaner pattern at a better price.

Whichever code you choose, callers in the area will see a local number.
