Numbers That Sound Like Fortune.
Chinese number traditions (吉利数字) are homophone-based — a digit is lucky or unlucky because it sounds like a word with a strong cultural meaning, like 8 (发, "prosper") or 4 (死, "death").

The single digits
- 8 — 发 fā, "prosper." The most desired digit in the system.
- 6 — 流 liú, "flow." Smooth sailing, especially in business.
- 9 — 久 jiǔ, "long-lasting." Longevity and permanence.
- 2 — good things come in pairs; harmony and doubled happiness.
- 4 — 死 sǐ, "death." The most avoided digit — comparable to 13 in the West.
- 3 — 生 shēng, "life/growth." Mildly auspicious.
- 7 — mixed; can suggest rising, or carries a minor cautionary note.
- 1 / 5 / 0 — largely neutral on their own, but amplify neighboring digits.
Beyond single digits, certain full sequences — 168 ("prosper all the way"), 888 (triple prosperity), 520 / 1314 ("I love you, forever"), and 28 (Cantonese for "easy fortune") — are recognized as fixed lucky phrases in their own right, regardless of the individual digits.
